About Speciality Fibres and Materials (SFM)SFM was acquired from Acordis by Lohmann and Rauscher in February 2005. The business has been committed to the development and manufacture of fibres and their application to customised solutions since its inception in 1985. The evolution of SFM includes the following milestones: 1981 First commercial sales of alginate for woundcare use. 1985 SFM was founded under the name of Focus Polymers by Courtaulds Research to sell development products. 1986 First commercial sales of Micropake®. 1988 First sales of polypropylene conductive threads. 1989 SFM wins the Queens Award for Technology for alginate. 1990 First alginate dressings launched in USA. 1994 Business registered to ISO 9002. 1995 First commercial sales of Hydrocel®, a modified cellulose fibre, sold to ConvaTec. 1998 Akzo Nobel acquired Courtaulds and formed Acordis from the fibre business of both Courtaulds and Akzo Nobel. The company was renamed Acordis Speciality Fibres. 1999 Alginate business registered to EN 46002. 2004 Acordis sells the growing ASF/Hydrocel business to ConvaTec. The alginate and Micropake® businesses, and new product development strategy, continue as usual under the new name of Acordis Services Ltd (ASL) 2005 Acordis sells its Acordis Services Limited (ASL) alginate and Micropake® businesses to the Lohmann and Rauscher Group.
